Meteor Strike In Russia, Hundreds Injured

Amateur videos broadcast on state television showed an object streaking across the sky, trailing smoke, around 9:20 a.m. local time before bursting into a fireball. It caused a sonic boom from which residents in the city of Chelyabinsk, the largest in the affected region, described a shock wave that blew in doors, smashed glass and set off car alarms.

Almost 1,000 people sought medical attention, mostly for cuts from flying glass, and 43 were hospitalized, the Emergency Situations Ministry said. Around 3,000 buildings were damaged by the blast, which blew a hole in the walls of a metals factory in Chelyabinsk, approximately 900 miles east of Moscow.

I was privileged to see a wonderful meteor fireball on Friday October 13TH, 2001 when I was down in Wichita Ks.

It didn't explode like the Russian one but it did break up into several different pieces around the main bright core meteor. The fireball came in from the south and traversed the whole western sky near the zenith until it disappeared in the north.

One of the really neat things was that it was just after sunset and there was a storm on the western horizon, so it was very dark out, but the 'smoke' trails of the meteor and fragments were up in the sunlight glowing very bright. It was one of the most amazing and pretty things I have ever seen.

I feel sad for the injured, but i'm so hyped with this. i'm not sure why, but large cosmic stuff like this gets my juices going. i've been watching these videos over and over.
You're pretty lucky to have seen something like that, David.

I went straight to a good source Doc. I've been a fan of the blog Englishrussia for about three years now.

Yeah Gabriel, I've been into amateur astronomy since I was a little boy, this stuff gets me going too! And I am sure there will be more footage to come.
