Strange Days Indeed Brews

I posted a story recently about a beer made with bull balls: HERE
And it got me thinking of all the strange alcoholic beverages I've seen on my forays through the intertubes throughout the years.  So in the Halloween spirit I'm doing something differently and am making a top ten list (not necessarily in order) of some of the worlds strangest brews. CHEERS!

#10.  Chicha - Beer made with saliva:
“You need to convert the starches in the corn into fermentable sugars,” the always entertaining Mr. Calagione said by phone from his headquarters in Rehoboth Beach. “One way is through the malting process. But another way — there are natural enzymes in human saliva and by chewing on corn, whether they understood the science of it, ancient brewers through trial and error learned that the natural enzymes in saliva would convert the starch in corn into sugar, so it would ferment. It may sound a little unsavory. ...”

#9.  Gecko Lizard Wine:
"Lizard wine from China tastes a little like brandy. It apparently improves eyesight and as a bonus can protect against evil spirits.A green-hued, brandy-like liquor, it is produced by fermenting rice wine in a cask [for over a year] with a generous helping of geckos and ginseng."

#8.  Snake Bile Wine:
"Snake bile wine is usually served fresh at some of the nicer Vietnamese restaurants. The waiter slices open a live snake to get at the gallbladder inside and the bile in the snake’s gallbladder is mixed into a glass of rice wine and served as an aperitif. The drink is usually served before a dinner prepared from the rest of the snake. With a reputation for not only getting you drunk, but also making you virile this snake bile wine is said to bless the drinker with a variety of other health benefits."

#6.   Sourtoe Cocktails:
"Established in 1973, the Sourtoe Cocktail has become a Dawson City tradition. The original rules were that the toe must be placed in a beer glass full of champagne, and that the toe must touch the drinker's lips during the consumtion of the alcohol before he or she can claim to be a true Sourtoer. The rules have changed in the past twenty-seven years. The Sourtoe can be had with any drink now (even ones that aren't alcoholic), but one rule remains the same. The drinker's lips must touch the toe. " You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow-- But the lips have gotta touch the toe."

The Sourtoes are actual human toes that have been dehydrated and preserved in salt. Swallowing one is not suggested."

Here is the Sourtoe Cocktail Club website,  and interesting place to visit:

#5.  Baby Mouse Wine:

"To make baby mice wine, stuff rodents no more than three days old into a bottle of rice wine and let stew for a year. The tonic is believed to be an all-purpose cure for everything from asthma to liver disease."

They say it tastes kind of like gasoline.  I wonder if they eat them like some do Tequila worms?

#4.   Cannabis Liquors:
There are a few more of these too!

"So you like smoking weed (not that anyone here is endorsing it). Still, why not drink it, then, too? In Holland, you can, and it’s perfectly legal — especially if you stumble upon Kierewiet, served in many establishments in Amsterdam. Touted as a digestif, Kierewiet is really more like a cannabis cocktail, bearing a strong green color, a bold marijuana leaf on the label, and containing 14.5% alcohol."

I suppose drinking Marijuana booze would make you hungry (give you the munchies) wouldn't it?  So after drinking it you can have...

#3.   Pizza Beer:
"Pizza Beer" IS A DEBRIS FREE product. The Margarita pizza is put into the mash & steeped like a tea bag. A whole wheat crust made with water, flour & yeast is topped with tomato, oregano, basil & garlic. The essence of the pizza spices is washed off with hot water and filtered into a brewpot, where it is boiled for a long, long time. During the process, we add hops & spices in a cheesecloth type bag & filter the cooled liquid into a fermentation vessel. (big glass 6 gallon water jug). After a week or two, the beer is good to go. Keg it or bottle it."

#2.  Snake And Scorpion Wine:
"Snake and scorpion wines are also known as a natural medicine used to treat different health problems such as back pain, rheumatism, lumbago and other health conditions.
These rice-based liquors are also considered to be a strong natural aphrodisiac.
While you might baulk at the idea of giving your other half a bottle for Valentine's Day, the drink has been touted as one of the most manly beverages ever made."

#1.  Airag:
The above photo is actually camel Airag

"Mare’s milk is stored in a cow’s stomach near the entrance of each family’s yurt, or nomadic tent, and left to ferment until it reaches close to 5% alcohol content. An average person can drink as much as 5 liters of the stuff in a day, and their passion for it means that Mongolia also has one of the highest incidences of cirrhosis of the liver anywhere in the world.

HOW DOES IT TASTE? Imagine watery, sour yogurt with an aroma of equine piss. This is worse.

Well I hope you are not too thirsty after this post. :)  If you can think of any other super strange brews let me know in the comments section.

Great post! I'd actually like to taste all of these, but only once. I do find most of them disgusting, especially the one with the toes. Blaargh! It wouldn't be an easy task.

Being a reckless pizza fan, the pizza beer might be pretty decent.
